10 things in tech you need to know today

Good morning! It's a cloudy day in London today. Here's the tech news you need to know this Tuesday.
1. Google has confirmed it is launching its own wireless service. The company says it will start at a "small scale" to "show what's possible." It'll be a "virtual" network operator, buying wireless spectrum from other companies, and will scale up if successful.
2. Forbes released its annual list of the richest people in the world. There's multiple high-profile tech figures on the list, and Bill Gates is number once again.
3. Obama has slammed China's planned new rules for technology companies. Beijing is considering strict new counter-terrorism laws that would require tech companies to install "backdoors" in their software to allow government access.
4. Hilary Clinton didn't use an official government email address while serving as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. This may have been a security risk.
5. Google executive Mary Lou Jepsen has jumped ship to work for Facebook-owned virtual reality headset manufacturer Oculus Rift. Jepsen previously worked for Google's secretive Google X labs, where she led the "Display" division when Google Glass was launched.
6. Multiple people fell asleep at Mark Zuckerberg's speech at Mobile World Congress. The Facebook CEO was at the Barcelona conference to talk about Internet.org, an attempt to bring Internet to the developing world.
7. Chinese $40 billion startup Xiaomi has launched a 16 megapixel GoPro competitor. Xiaomi is often referred to as the "Apple of China," and despite boasting impressive specs, the new camera costs just $82.
8. Google is backing down on its plan to encrypt all new Android phones by default. The company had previously pledged to have all Android 5.0 Lollipop phones use strong encryption as standard, but this is no longer the case. The company says it still plans to implement default-on encryption in a "future" version of Android.
9. Amazon may soon let you ship to Cuba. A "ship to Cuba" button was added to the site for the first time on Monday, but it is not yet operational.
10. Netflix is going to launch in New Zealand and Australia on March 24. In a special deal, Netflix customers using ISP iiNet will not have to pay for the data used while streaming video on the platform.

Amazon challenges Google, Microsoft with its own email service

Amazon challenges Google, Microsoft with its own email service

SAN FRANCISCO: Amazon.com Inc accelerated its efforts to win over corporate clients on Wednesday by announcing an email and scheduling service that will compete with Microsoft Corp and Google Inc .

The service, dubbed WorkMail, will launch in the second quarter and has been developed by the company's cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS). It highlights Amazon's efforts to convince deep-pocketed companies, called enterprises in tech parlance, to shift more of their work to AWS.

Launching an email and scheduling service is likely the first step toward a broader suite of Amazon tools to gain corporate clients, analysts said. For example, Google's Gmail offers many other services beyond email and calendars including file-sharing and video conferencing.

AWS has spent the last couple of years trying to get corporate clients on board because big businesses spend more on data centers than startups, who were the initial focus of its business. But there are concerns that Amazon is spreading itself too thin, given its other sizeable investments in areas like Hollywood-style production and consumer devices.

"Email is a Trojan Horse into the enterprise," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said. He added that email is a $1 billion opportunity for Amazon given the popularity of AWS and Amazon's willingness to sacrifice margins for volume.

NEW DELHI: Microsoft has veered from its regular corporate social responsibility route with a centre in one of Asia's largest red light areas in the Capital.

The information technology major — through its YouthSpark initiative — along with a voluntary organization, is providing basic IT and job skills to sex workers and their children at the 'Pahal Centre' on Garstin Bastion road in New Delhi.

"There are certain groups who lack access to opportunities more severely than others and require more targeted intervention. The youth we are working with at the Pahal centre are one such segment of society," says Madhu Khatri, head-citizenship, Microsoft India.

Microsoft is engaged with the Pahal Centre through Aide Et Action International, an international development-profit organization.

The Pahal Centre is in operation since September 2014. Already, two batches consisting of 30 students each (who were taught basic IT skills and spoken English for three months) have graduated.

New Dispaly : ureka features a 5.5-inch IPS display with HD (720x1280p) resolution. Unlike OnePlus One, the panel is not full-HD and this implies that the number of pixels per inch are less.

We noticed some distortion due to lower pixel density and also found colours to be a little over saturated. The display's colour temperature is on the cooler side resulting in a blue tint. Switching from a OnePlus One, we found the tint to be intimidating resulting in whites looking blue and colours not looking very accurate.
